1970's Flashback: Ozark Music Festival
The 1970s were an intensely turbulent time, with various cultures and subcultures coming out into the open at once. Cynicism abounded as militant feminism, Civil Rights, the Watergate scandal, and the Vietnam War brought gritty reality to the forefront. Wishing to escape the hassles of the decade, in July 1974, over 150,000 people flooded into rural Sedalia, Missouri, for the three-day Ozark Music Festival. Residents living near the Missouri State Fairgrounds, where the festival was held, woke on July 19, 1974, with attendees sleeping in their yards and a long line of bumper-to-bumper traffic clogging the roads into town. At the time, no one knew the Ozark Music Festival would become one of the largest, least remembered music festivals ever held, or that the festival would change the quiet little town of Sedalia forever. Thirty-five years later, an exhibit entitled “Seventies Flashback: A Look Back at the July 1974 Ozark Music Festival,” currently on display at the historic Katy Depot in Sedalia, takes a look back at the seventies and the music festival. Rare photographs and event memorabilia feature the music, the attendees, and the aftermath. The historic Katy Depot located at 600 East Third Street is open Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. beginning April 4. Free-will donations are accepted to offset the cost of exhibits. Book by Tim Kelly Music and lyrics by Bill Francoeur The timeless "Wizard of Oz" tale has been adapted into a dazzling musical. A cyclone carries Dorothy and Toto to the magical Land of Oz. From there, Baum's lovable characters, rubber-legged Scarecrow, Cowardly Lion and Tin Woodsman, join Dorothy on a journey to meet the great Oz. While on their trek, they battle the Wicked Witch of the West, who is determined to get revenge for the death of her sister. "Little Women"
This classic musical is about the March sisters’ journey from childhood to maturity during the American Civil War. Audiences of all generations will enjoy acquainting — or reacquainting — themselves with the sisters: Meg, the eldest; Jo, the high-spirited tomboy; Amy, the self-centered beauty; and gentle Beth, as well as their beloved Marmee and Father. Together the March family learns to endure both good times and bad as they share the joys and pains of growing up. This adaptation skillfully compresses the novel while still including milestones such as Meg’s declaration of independence from the tyranny of Aunt March, Amy’s trip to Europe and even Beth’s death. Tickets go on sale Sept. 28, 2009. Call: 660-827-2899
Location: Liberty Center Association for the Arts
Time: 7:30 pm, Cost: $15 Adults, $12 Seniors (60 and over), $8 Children (12 and under)
