Katy Trail State Park

The Katy Trail State Park is the nation’s longest developed rail-trail, stretching 237 miles across Missouri and offering an unforgettable journey through scenic countryside, historic communities, and some of the state’s most beautiful landscapes. Following the former route of the Missouri-Kansas-Texas (Katy) Railroad, the trail provides opportunities for cycling, walking, running, wildlife viewing, photography, and horseback riding in designated sections. Along the way, visitors can explore charming small towns, historic landmarks, river bluffs, agricultural landscapes, and remnants of Missouri’s railroad heritage.
Sedalia serves as a popular stop along the trail and offers convenient access to local lodging, dining, shopping, attractions, and services for trail users. The city features two official trailheads: the Katy Depot Welcome Center at Mile Marker 227 and the Missouri State Fairgrounds at Mile Marker 229. The historic Katy Depot houses visitor information, exhibits highlighting the area’s railroad history, restrooms, and trail amenities, while the State Fairgrounds trailhead provides additional parking and access to one of Missouri’s most recognized event venues.
Whether you’re planning a short day ride, a weekend getaway, or a multi-day adventure across Missouri, Sedalia’s central location and welcoming hospitality make it an ideal place to begin, end, or pause your Katy Trail journey. From exploring downtown shops and restaurants to discovering local museums, historic sites, and events, visitors will find plenty of reasons to linger in Sedalia while experiencing one of America’s premier recreational trails.
